Beginning Your Homeschool Journey
Congratulations! You are about to start the greatest adventure of your life. We at Demme Learning are so excited that you are going to begin a homeschool journey. You probably have a lot of questions, and we want you to have confidence as you start educating your children at home.
If you read this blog, you will probably be attending your first homeschool conference. That is an amazing and exciting time. Let us encourage you to do lots of looking and take lots of notes, but on your first day of the conference, don’t make any decisions. Gather information and be prepared to ask lots of questions. You may ask, “Well, what questions should I ask?” Here are a couple of ideas and some resources to review as you continue to explore this new world.
A great place to start is to consider why you are launching this journey. You may be dissatisfied with an education system and looking for a change. Perhaps this is something you have always intended to do. Or you could be a family who is looking for a different relationship with your child/children. Those are all valid reasons for beginning a homeschool journey (and we know there are many more.) Knowing your why will become invaluable to you as you make curriculum and program decisions throughout your homeschool time. Frame your why in a positive light.
In this initial decision-making process, you’re going to receive lots of advice. Weigh all of it carefully and recognize that you know your children best. Make your decisions based on what you know about your children. Toward that end, we have lots of resources for you.
Here’s a Blog we wrote about The Homeschool Journey: Tips for New Homeschoolers From Ten Veterans
Here’s an episode of the Demme Learning Show about making the decision to homeschool and the options you need to weigh: Do I Have What it Takes to Homeschool My Child?
And last but not least, our homeschool 101 ebook is available to fuel your thoughts as you explore.
You will have more questions than you have answers for at the present time, and that is ok. Your journey is yours; it will take time to learn your styles, skills, and preferences. Be patient with yourself. This is an adventure.
We are happy to join you in this journey and answer questions for you. Our customer service team is second to none, and they have also been where you are now. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us to help you make good decisions as you embark.
