Roadschooling: How to Homeschool on the Road

What is Roadschooling?

Adventure is calling! But what about your child’s education? Roadschooling may be the answer! Over the past few years, roadschooling has become as popular as tiny houses and minimalism.

What exactly is roadschooling, you ask? Roadschooling is simply homeschooling while on the road.

Many of us have been roadschooling at one time or another, probably without even realizing it. There are many ways to homeschool while on the road. Some roadschoolers continue learning while on a vacation, while others take it to the extreme, and travel the world while continuing to homeschool.

The Positives of Roadschooling

Let’s start with the positive aspects of road schooling.

There is much to learn and experience, no matter your age. We are meeting new people and are able to turn almost every experience into an opportunity to learn something new.

My husband and I feel we are setting a positive example for our children by showing them that we are continuing to learn alongside our children. We, too, are lifelong learners. As Benjamin Franklin wisely said, “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”

Young or old, we learn best by being involved. Roadschooling does just that. It allows for hands on interaction with the world around us. It enables you to immerse yourself in a place, learn the history and experience the culture firsthand.

The Negatives of Roadschooling

There are some drawbacks to road schooling.

It requires a flexible mindset as well as organization and preparation.

Whether traveling on land, by air or over the sea, you’ll want to limit what you bring. You’ll also want to stay extremely organized with what you do choose to bring. We purposefully choose curriculum that lends itself well to traveling.

With the Math-U-See program, we utilize the Digital Packs to the fullest extent. My kids especially enjoy using the digital manipulatives.

We also have chosen the Spelling You See program for the short yet highly effective spelling lessons. As a bonus, we have been able to integrate many of the Spelling You See passages that address specific historical milestones and important historical figures with places we have visited while being on the road.

Why Did We Choose to Roadschool?

We are middle of the road roadschoolers – pun intended. We have been homeschooling in the traditional sense for a few years now with some roadschooling added in while vacationing. We recently had an opportunity to relocate a thousand miles away, and we chose to take a leap of faith.

We sold our house along with the majority of our belongings and are currently living in our motorhome with a teen, a tween and a 75-lb labrador retriever. Some people may think us a bit unconventional, but we are of the mindset that life is an adventure and we are making the most this life has to offer.

We have always enjoyed experiencing and exploring the world around us so road schooling seemed to fit naturally into our daily lives. It hasn’t taken us long to realize that there is so much more to discover by extending our learning outside of our home. We will eventually settle again into a home, without wheels, but our sense of adventure will not end.

We will continue take trips in our motorhome and roadschool to experience the amazing world around us and meet wonderful people along the way.
